been going to a man in bay ridge for 20 years and i believe he is an artist - does subtle but radical things and creates a slight edge to my everyday fuss free slightly messy style. it's good to build a long relationship with someone you trust

One of my favorite posts yet. Any advice for hair care products? Specifically shampoo & styling products. We have similar hair consistency and I have spent years experimenting with nowhere near the success you've achieved. Checked the B.L.I.S.S. list and didn't see anything so any advice is appreciated!

Thank you — I don’t wash it too much and every now and then use “easy rider “ by Kevin Murphy… that’s it though!

Great post. I've had varying versions of my neon green hair for a decade now and then only in the last couple years my stylist and I have finally locked in the perfect cut and color combo. But I admit in low moments to wondering how old is too old for fantasy hair!! Am I gonna wake up in 15 years with the same cut and color because I'm so locked in? Is it corny to have fantasy hair in your 30s, 40s, 50s, or is it actually dope to have a signature look?? Will be thinking about this post as my style evolves over time, that's for sure...

If it feels perfect, lock it in — then just periodically check in with yourself / re-read this sletter (😜) and make sure you don’t wanna unlock it !

Always gotta check in!!

Also idk if this was intentional but the title of the post unlocked a memory of an adult swim cartoon by the same name from the early 00s... I wonder how it holds up....

Nice one, 'planes. A good follow-up to your age-appropriate post last spring. Again, it's so much a question of finding one's personal style, over and over again as we change and grow. Think of Gertrude Stein: In her old age (and not before), she started wearing beautiful fitted brocade designer vests and getting her hair cut in a short butch style. Gorgeous, so much more appealing than her earlier meek bun and full-cut big dresses, finally taking her place in the world. In The Sartorialist, near the middle of the book, Scott Schuman has a picture of an older guy with a receding hairline and dreads, wearing a tight black jacket with subtle fur trim over an impeccable white shirt. Guy looks great! But nobody should try to imitate those looks: those people GREW into them.

As someone who used to experiment every 4-5 months with my hairstyles, I've finally figured out the hairstyle that suits me best and I've learned to love the natural styling of my hair. I used to always gel and over style it and now I just let it rock (with a little air drying product to help) and I don't think I'm going to turn back.

So many insights in this one. That quote of Erin’s about how what we really want from a haircut is for our whole face to change is *very* spot-on.

And now you’ve really got me thinking about what I want to tell the guy I go to when he cuts my hair in a few weeks. Stick with the usual? Or go out on a limb and try something new? Gotta think about this one…!

Also, just to second what others have said, your pandemic-era mop is a killer look. You ought to bring that back for sure.

One nice thing about hair-related risktaking is, it grows back !

Yeah, my thoughts exactly! Worst case scenario, I guess I wear a baseball cap to my friends’ wedding next month, haha.

I really believe hair should be something that should be a joyful, even humorous part of someone's look! I want to see businesspeople with liberty spikes, bankers with mullets. Flop and flop again people, I love seeing it out in the wild.

A case for not changing your hair with receding hairline swag: https://imgur.com/a/TxVcB8J

Last pic I brought to haircut.. I said “can you do this but less fucked up?” We have similar face shapes, but I have curly hair, it still worked out. My hair gets a bit straighter showered weirdly also after a few days natural oils weigh it down without it being greasy. I’m 30 and even though it’s edgy it also weirdly feels conservative now on that short haired mom vibe. Not a mom yet but growing it out now in preparation!!! https://imgur.com/a/N3I41ww

If you have the opportunity to form a relationship with the person who you work with your hair on (y’all’s vibes are on similar wavelengths) I highly recommend doing so.

1. being friendly and chatting with humans is dope

2. they get to know you better and can help you with styling by sharing new perspectives with u since they know you better!!

I appreciate and trust my hair person so much when I show up with vague ideas and we chat and come up with something dope. Helps me feel less regretful about a haircut now “looking right”. Leave a fat tip and re-schedule for some point in the future to meet again :)

It is terrifying to sit up straight in the barber’s chair and respond to the question: “what are we doing today?”

Scissor cut all around 💇🏻‍♂️

I'm not saying it's impossible to swag out when your hair is thinning, but man it's a damn sight tougher. I'm in my early 40s, so I'm not looking to rock the power donut, and the reverse toupee (i.e. buzzing it all down) isn't ideal because one of my besties is already doing that; we already do the most stereotypical bearded white guy stuff imaginable, so matching our look even further is not a goal of mine. I've got both a fivehead AND a big empty patch on the back of my head, which makes haircuts tough to nail down

I’ve found that getting good at buzzing my own head was actually a wonderful style transition. 5min and a shower and you’re fresh and clean, no waiting to get a trim/appointment and free!

I always loved how Saiorse Ronan’s character in Atonement kept the same blunt bob for her entire life. That’s my kind of energy. Although in my 70s I may dye it pastel pink.

Also is this a safe space to share that in the early aughts I took a photo of Ashlee Simpson’s shag to the salon. I was 21 I also thought Alizé flavoured liqueur was the height of sophistication.
