I could be reaching here but I feel like this applies to fashion as well — like people with their own kinda established style tend to emanate higher levels of swag than someone wearing the trend of the week?

I’ve always been a big proponent of just chilling in your seat at the airport. Nothing more uncomfortable and swagless then standing in the middle of the airplane aisle with your bags

This is the hardest I've laughed in awhile. I will be taking this profound wisdom with me into the rest of the week

It’s funny because I’ve jokingly suggested an A.I.R.P.O.R.T. mindset post about how cool looking people (believe the example was Mayer) seem to ascend to a still higher realm of cool when they’re in the airport, and I think one possible explanation (besides say, the semiotic ‘baggage’ of actual sauced-out baggage and the similarly sauced-out adventures to parts unknown it implies) is that there’s just nothing cooler than *not rushing* in a place where everyone else is doing just that!

It’s kind of similar to the feeling of looking up from your phone on the subway and seeing everyone else buried face deep and ensnared in their device…a brief glimpse outside the matrix, as it were. I mean if I remember correctly, the actual symbol you had escaped from the matrix in the movie is that you could now manifest your own cool leather trenchcoat and wraparounds and not look like all the other pod-coddled nerds who were always, and this is key, absolutely *rushing* by in the back of the shot, ready to bump and jostle anyone who even dared consider a moment of stillness!

All of that aside, this post was a hard pill to swallow for this fast walking NYer, but a much needed one--thank you, this is why I subscribe

I've heard it said, that: "Stillness is the Move"...

I aspire to this way of life and have two thoughts; one of them is a story.

1. Used to work in food svc. One day in a high-pressure kitchen situation, I was getting hasty (see point 2) and sloppy. A more experienced chef said to me: “Run with your mind, walk with your hands,” at which point a bright light illuminated the inside of my head. Over time, I’ve realized how much more efficiently you can move/work when doing so with focus and purpose. Thus,

2. You *can* do things with rapidity and still be elegant and on point, but it takes focus and practice. I would call what you’re referring to “haste” - the unpremeditated attempt to go fast, which often results (see above) in slop.

I started doing exactly this (!) after returning to NYC from a trip to Berlin, where people wait for the light. Before, I used to rush across the street in fits and starts, gauging the speed of oncoming cars and bikes, stressfully stopping or doubling back after misjudgments, and generally gaining a couple seconds at best after the drama. Now, I just wait for the light and feel a sense of peace and acceptance.

You're always fighting for space in NYC. It's not just that people are in a rush. Everything is competitive from getting a seat on the train for fighting for space on the street. That is the mindset and people who can't handle that and keep up get left by the wayside.
