As long as we’ve been publishing Blackbird Spyplane, Erin and I (Jonah) have been enormous admirers of a gifted independent ceramicist who makes small runs of beautiful work in her tiny studio. When she releases a new batch, they evanesce within minutes. Since we try to avoid “setting an alarm for the drop” mindset, we’ve always struck out, moseying over to her site in a relatively leisurely manner to try and pick up some mugs, or a bowl, or a vase — only to re-discover that “relatively leisurely moseying” is a strategy for guaranteed failure, and that everything’s long since sold out.
However! She also has a showroom, where she keeps pieces on deck for visitors, and if the timing aligns, she’s happy to invite people to peek into her studio, too.
During a recent bit of travel, we were psyched to finally do exactly that, tapping in IRL with a ceramics visionary & real one to learn more about how she developed her distinctive style, why she insists on keeping her line small, and what she’s got coming on the horizon…
